Cafe Phoenicia offers Mediterranean ambience, menu
By Howard Arceneaux Zachary Business
When John Mekari and partner Menam
Abdalla decided to open Cafe
Phoenicia in Zachary, they wanted to establish
more than a restaurant.
They sought to create a mood, one that
reflected the entire Mediterranean region, a large
geographic area rich in history and culture. Every aspect of the restaurant reflects that attention
to detail, from the colorful scenes of ancient
Phoenicia that decorate the walls to the menu
offerings of authentic food recipes of the Middle
East and Southern Europe.
Indeed, what they produced is an artistic
reflection of the Mediterranean as unique as the
dishes typical of the region. Since Cafe
Phoenicia opened on Valentine's Day in 2003 at
5647 Main Street, Suite A, diners have been
treated to the classic Mediterranean mood that
Mekari and Abdalla envisioned.

Cafe Phoenicia, in Zachary, takes diners on a taste treat to the eastern Mediterranean. The foods of Greece, Lebanon and Egypt are featured, along with a nod to Turkey and Italy.
Situated in a shopping center on Main St. about a half-mile from La. 19, the restaurant's decor reminded us of a taverna we once visited on a walk to the Acropolis in Athens. Wall murals capture scenes of the Mediterranean while a small fountain and feathery green plants lend a courtyard feel to the cafe.

ZACHARY -- The owners of Cafe Phoenicia attribute the restaurant's bustling business to the quality of the food, the atmosphere and its reasonable prices. "Business has been excellent. It has exceeded our expectations," Johnny Makeri, one of the owners, said. "People have complimented us on both the food and the decor, and the size of the servings. Most of the customers take boxes home with them."
